Hardware / Heat - June 2017
« on: June 19, 2017, 09:28:38 am »
As you will have noticed, there is a bit of a heatwave at the moment.

Computers really do not like high heat and may fail if they get too hot.

Try to keep the computer cool. Ensure that the air vents are clear. Aim a fan at them if you can.

Symptoms of overheating include 'hanging' and screen tearing or distortion.

It's a good time to maintain a proper backup regime.

TPN Invoicing / Amazon services
« on: June 13, 2017, 12:35:02 pm »
Just add the RDCN and RDCD services into TPN Invoicing directly using Setup/Services then simply use Setup/Dynamic to set them to price to standard services.

TPN Invoicing / Backups - you MUST do them
« on: June 13, 2017, 12:33:59 pm »
Please complete a backup on a regular basis. Our findings are that only one in three customers ever do this.

While data corruption is rare it can occur if you have hardware issues or your computer crashes within the program. Any form of corruption should be taken seriously and the cause tracked down. You should never ignore it

This is on the Utilities menu and allows you to create a file called BACKUP.ZIP which contains all your data.

While we do provide fix routines in the program, using these should be a last resort if all else fails. Fixing files may remove corrupted records completely.

Restoring a backup is a far simpler solution to a data corruption problem.

TPN Invoicing / Error 47 - any time
« on: June 08, 2017, 10:26:25 am »
This is an Invalid Record Declaration. Data corruption.

It indicates a disk or network error of some description.

If the data is on a network or NAS drive then there is an easy check for you to perform.

Make a new directory on your local C: drive called MYDATA and copy all the data from the remote directory into it. Run TPN Invoicing and go into Utilities and Data Path. Alter this to C:\MYDATA

Run the File Manager on any files reported as having problems. Test the system afterwards.

Remember to alter the data directory in TPN SOAP if you are using this.

If it works fine on the local C: drive but doesn't on the network or NAS drive then your issue is outside the program.

Loadmaster / Error '64DriverLoad.exe' when printing invoices
« on: June 01, 2017, 05:01:38 pm »
This is due to a problem with the Epson printer driver and is not a Loadmaster problem.

It will occur in other programs.

Try reloading a new printer driver.

General discussions / New EU Data Protection legislation
« on: June 01, 2017, 02:42:18 pm »
The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC and was finally approved by the EU Parliament on 14 April 2016. The Enforcement date is 25 May 2018.

It tightens the restrictions on holding personal data and increases the penalties for breaches.

If you work with EU countries then you MUST conform to it even after Brexit.

The most notable feature is that opting-out is now a requirement. If you want to receive further information or join a mailing list then you must actually opt-in.

Operational Status / Bulletin Board - service update - 30/05/2017
« on: May 31, 2017, 09:10:31 am »
The MySQL database behind the site became corrupted for some reason. The Bulletin Board was moved on a temporary basis to Antares.

Like all good users we maintain backups, but the most recent backup had a script error in it and would not restore properly. It took a little time to read through the 6000 lines of code and manually repair it.

Now fully back in action.

Windows / Windows Vista - officially dead
« on: April 13, 2017, 09:34:21 am »
Microsoft have finally withdrawn all support and updates for Windows Vista.

XP is dead.

Windows 7 is hanging on by the skin of its teeth.

Migrate to Windows 10 or if you only use a computer for emails, browsing the internet etc then consider upgrading to Linux.

Miscellaneous / CPU running at 100% and computer slow
« on: April 11, 2017, 06:56:51 pm »
WUDFHost.exe running at 30-40% alone and the CPU at 100%

This happened to us recently on one computer. It took a lot of research to track it down to a single driver not liking a recent Windows 10 update.

The driver was for an NFC project using an NXP Semiconductor USB. Windows just didn't like the driver.

You could terminate the process but it kept reloading WUDFHost and it went back to 100% load.

The answer was to remove the associated program then go into Control Panel and Devices and remove the hardware entry.

After removal and a reboot the CPU went down to 27%.

This is likely to give a few headaches for the unaware.

It is a good time to check that all your drivers are up to date!

You may get an error message and the program stops. It may occur immediately after installing a new version of the program or you log onto Windows as a different user.

It's due to security in Windows and means that the program was previously installed under a particular user and that's not you!

There are two solutions :-

1. De-install Sameday Express. Browse to C:\ProgramData\ZiPZAP Computers Limited\ and delete the SAMEDAY EXPRESS folder you find here. You may need to authorise it as ADMINISTRATOR.

Re-install Sameday Express.

You will have to go into Setup/Local Parameters and complete this again.

OR (and probably easier)

2. Go into My Computer then Local Disk C: and the folder ProgramData (not Program Files) and you will find a directory called ZiPZAP Computers Limited.

Enter this directory and you will see a folder called SAMEDAY EXPRESS. Right-click on this and choose PROPERTIES.

Click on the SECURITY tab. Half way down you will see a button that says EDIT. Click this.

You will get a new screen with a list of users. Click on the ADD button.

Add a user called Everyone

Hit the CHECK button. It will be accepted. Click on Everyone in the table. Put a tick in Full Control at the bottom and hit the APPLY button.

Now OK and come out. You can now access the system as another user.

Miscellaneous / Malwarebytes - IObit - feud? 16/03/2017
« on: March 17, 2017, 02:29:17 pm »
Malwarebytes is reporting ALL of IObit Advanced Systemcare as a PUP this morning and blocking it! Over 1000 files were reported as PUPs this morning and they were placed in Quarantine.

There seems to be some kind of politics going on between Malwarebytes and IObit over copyright which may explain it. This is explained on the Malwarebytes site.

IOBit say you should alter PUP detection in Malwarebytes to IGNORE.
