Operational Status / zipzap.eu website no longer working
« on: May 24, 2021, 08:50:25 am »
www.zipzap.eu

While we still own the web site address, the site is not operational.

This is due to the fallout between the UK and the EU over Brexit. The EU have pulled the plug on the connection despite the fact that the UK is still part of Europe, meaning that the website and the associated email addresses are 'in limbo'. We are locked out just like all other UK users of .eu websites.

Use zipzap.co.uk instead.

How petty. Children!

TPN Invoicing / Faster pricing percentage updates
« on: March 05, 2021, 12:59:32 pm »
If you are doing a large global pricing update and your data is on a network then there is a quicker way of doing it.

Make a note of where your data is currently located. This appears at the top of the main screen.

Create three new directories on your local drive C: and call then MyOldBackup, MyNewBackup and MyData.

Ensure TPN Invoicing is not being updated and don't allow any changes while you carry out this procedure.

Go into Utilities and Backup. Backup your system to C:\MyOldBackup

Once done go into Utilities and Datapath. Alter the data directory to C:\MyData

Now go into Utilities and Restore Data.

Locate the file called BACKUP.ZIP in C:\MyOldBackup and restore this. You are now working with your existing data but on the local C: drive.

Perform your pricing changes.

When done go into Utilities and Backup. Backup the data to C:\MyNewBackup

Now go into Utilities and Datapath. Alter this back to your original network location.

Go into Utilities and Restore. Pick the file BACKUP.ZIP from C:\MyNewBackup and let it restore.

Your amended data is now on the network drive. You have a copy of the original data in C:\MyOldData

Updating on a local drive can be much faster than the network.

TPN Invoicing / Not responding during pricing update
« on: March 04, 2021, 08:48:35 pm »
Symptom - you get Not Responding message during very large pricing updates.

The message means it has not refreshed the screen and not that it has stopped. It is a Windows message.

To check this, simply press the CAPS LOCK key. Does the CAPS LOCK light go on? If CAPS LOCK works then it's still running.

Do not press CTL-ALT-DEL and terminate the program. Give it more time.

Apple / Update older Mac when normal update fails
« on: March 02, 2021, 04:47:11 pm »
Apple do not allow all older models to be updated to the latest version despite the fact that they are powerful enough.

If you get this then search for PATCHED SUR on the internet. This allows a different method of updating. My 2013 Macbook Pro has updated to Big Sur with this quite happily.

It gets round the software restrictions.

TPN Invoicing / VAT on non UK freight
« on: January 22, 2021, 08:51:00 am »
You cannot mix different VAT Rates on the same invoice as the VAT is applied to the net total.

The way to deal with mixed rates is to -

1. Create a new export account for the customer. In effect they have two account, one for UK and one for non-UK.
2. Set the new account to non-vatable
3. Enter non-UK in TPN Connect under the export account

The import should then deal with this. An invoice created under the account will be zero rated.

Loadmaster / VAT on jobs into EU
« on: January 13, 2021, 07:32:20 pm »
There seems to be some confusion concerning the application of VAT for transport charges into the EU by carriers after Brexit.

The VAT implications of the actual goods have nothing to do with the carriage charges as they are dealt with by the CHIEF system.

Carriage is a service and the application of VAT is determined by the 'place of supply'.

If the carriage is from the UK to the UK, the EU or elsewhere then the 'place of supply' is the UK.

UK VAT should be charged at the standard rate on UK destinations BUT where the place of supply is the UK, ZERO RATING applies to the supply of transport of goods from a place within to a place outside the UK and vice versa.
(VAT Notice 744B)

If the carriage is from the EU to the EU then no UK VAT is applicable. Note that VAT charges may be levied by the EU which have
to be accounted for depending upon whether it is a B2C (Business to Consumer) or B2B (Business to Business) supply.

In a EU B2B supply you do not need to charge VAT if you know the customer VAT number as they are responsible for it.
EU B2C VAT charges are dealt with through the non-UK VAT MOSS Scheme.

You are advised to consult your accountant and HMRC for clarification.

Raspberry Pi / Boot from USB
« on: January 05, 2021, 07:21:17 am »
The Pi 4 can boot from a USB stick instead of the SD card.

The USB must be USB 3.

Just insert the USB then copy the existing SD card using the SD card copy utility.

Shutdown. Remove the SD card. Power up. Boots much faster.

Miscellaneous / EU website converting to UK
« on: December 13, 2020, 09:25:22 pm »
With the upcoming possibility of our EU website being turned off in the Brexit row on 01/01/2021 we have started to upgrade our zipzap.uk site to replace it.

The loss of the site is beyond our control and we see it purely as a political action by Nominet and the EU. The UK has always been part of Europe and will continue to do so after the end of the year. We are not going anywhere.

All downloads are now available on the UK site.

Bought the new Pi 400 which is a Pi 4 in a proper keyboard.

Loadmaster / HTTP - the reference version cannot be reached
« on: December 11, 2020, 09:54:27 am »
You might get this on startup.

It's trying to update off the internet.

Delete the file wdupdate.net from the Loadmaster program directory.

Miscellaneous / UK based EU websites to end after 31/12/2020 :-[
« on: October 29, 2020, 02:05:05 pm »
A big warning to any UK owners of .eu websites.  :-[

If you are not based in the EU or don't have EU citizenship then after 31/12/2020 EIRid will be pulling the plug on your website and emails. They WILL stop working.

We will lose our zipzap.eu website, so use zipzap.co.uk instead.

TPN Invoicing / Cannot log in
« on: September 23, 2020, 01:35:47 pm »
Check the top line of the screen. It tells you the current data directory between the square brackets. Is this correct? Or does it incorrectly say C:\TPNINVG

If it is simply wrong then you can alter the Data Directory by clicking on the [...] symbol on the Login page (to the right of Password). You can then select the correct directory.

If this is NOT the case then get to the Login page. Login as a user called manager with a password of borg. You will get to the Name Table.

Is your username missing or the table blank? Click on Insert and add yourself as a user. Add a password. Set the User Level to Operator and the Restrictions to N. Now click on the Close button.
You should now be able to login.

Check that you are in the right Data Directory by viewing some of the data. It should not be blank.

If you need to change the directory go into Utilities and Data Path then simply alter it.
