Windows / Windows 10 - An app default was reset message.
« on: January 19, 2018, 04:37:20 pm »
An app caused a problem with the default app setting for ..... files, so it was reset to .....

This keeps on popping up, resetting image files, browsers etc to the Microsoft default versions.

This has just started on Windows 10. It does things like change your default browser to Edge. It is really annoying.

This details the problem and gives a solution -

http://techdows.com/2016/02/prevent-windows-10-resetting-file-associations.html

Basically it's caused by Microsoft update KB3135173

See -

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3032751/microsoft-windows/windows-10-forced-update-kb-3135173-changes-browser-and-other-defaults.html

A lot of this appears to be due to the Windows 10 Falls Update downloading about 4GB. If you keep getting this try to load and it seems to be an issue then:-

Go into C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and delete the Download folder.

Raspberry Pi / Spectre and Meltdown bugs
« on: January 18, 2018, 04:04:45 pm »
The Raspberry Pi cannot be affected by these bugs as it has a different type of CPU architecture.

No update is needed.

The simple explanation is that the username/password which you are using is not recognised as valid by TPN.

Check by logging into TPN Connect directly with the credentials you are trying to use.

Download the file SAGE.DAT from Downloads/TpnUK/TpnInvoicing.

Place this in the C:\TPNINVG directory and overwrite any previous file.

Not all Remote Desktop software works the way you expect.

File Manager should be done locally.

TPN Invoicing / Not generating PDF invoices
« on: January 07, 2018, 03:20:54 pm »
1. Go into Utilities and Layouts. Look down the list for Invoices. Click on this. Try to amend by going into Design.

If you do not see the template of the design then it is physically missing. The layouts are called LT files and are normally found in the INVOICES directory.

This problem is normally caused by changing the data directory and simply not copying the layouts at the same time.

2. Check the default program for displaying PDF documents. In Windows 10 updates this may be altered to the Edge Browser during an update. Have a look at the TPN Invoicing manual icon on your Desktop. Has this changed? Displaying an 'e' symbol by chance? Reset this to Adobe Reader if this occurs. Look in Control Panel then Default Programs. Also check that Adobe has not defaulted to 'Protected Mode'. Try to display an invoice from the program and see if its blocked.

3. Check that emailing is working by picking an invoice and using Report/Invoicing/CSV data. Does this send?

TPN Invoicing / File Manager does not work as expected
« on: January 05, 2018, 04:33:45 pm »
You run the File Manager and instead of simply automatically running through it brings up a box that says Topspeed Data Recovery.

This is because you are missing a load of files ending in TPE that should be in the data directory. These are blank data files called example files. The Fix routine uses thes as examples as to the structure of the real data files.

Simply go to our web site and into Downloads then TPN UK and TPN Invoicing. You will find a directory called TPE files here. Download these files and save them in the data directory.

TPN Invoicing / TPN SOAP WEB 2.98 released - 07/12/2017
« on: December 07, 2017, 02:51:42 pm »
Updated to give a warning message where you have the data on a network drive and there are Windows access restrictions which prevent data from downloading or updating.

This update also has minimal Windows security restrictions and if you load it over a version installed with higher 'rights' then you may get an error message :-

?Unable to open or create <C:\ProgramData\ZiPZAP Computers Limited\TPNSOAP\SParam?

This is all to do with ?rights? in Windows. If this is happens then follow these instructions :?

Go into My Computer then Local Disk C: and the folder ProgramData (not Program Files) and you will find a directory called ZiPZAP Computers Limited.

(Note that ProgramData is a hidden folder and you may have to unhide it. In Windows 10 click on Local Disk C: then View and Options. The setting is on the View tab.)

Enter this directory and you will see a folder called TPNSOAP. Right-click on this and choose PROPERTIES.

Click on the SECURITY tab. Half way down you will see a button that says EDIT. Click this.

You will get a new screen with a list of users. Click on the ADD button.

Add a user called Everyone

Hit the CHECK button. It will be accepted. Click on Everyone in the table. Put a tick in Full Control at the bottom and hit the APPLY button.

Now OK and come out. You can now access the system.

Sameday Express / Sameday Additions
« on: December 06, 2017, 02:16:30 pm »
Additions allow your customers to view their proof of delivery details online 24/7. Much of the setup is very easy.

You need either a fixed IP address on your router or the use of a Dynamic DNS Server, like DynDNS of No-IP. In the case of the dynamic address you simply complete the details on the router setup page (normally by using 192.168.0.1 in your browser). This simply 'pins' the location so it can be found on the web.

You set up a web server on one of the network computers (comes as standard on Windows after version 7) and load PHP on it, you then give it a fixed IP address on the router. You install a copy of Sameday on this computer as it loads an ODBC driver and connects to the data. You load the pages we supply on the wwwroot directory under the inetpub directory.

On the router you then redirect calls on port 80 to this computer. You can test by going to 127.0.0.1 in a browser on this computer. You should be able to query the database.

You issue your individual customers with their one username and password. They can then access the basic details of their jobs back as many days as you allow them. You can do this for all your customers.

A good idea is to redirect to these internal web pages from your web site.

Our Logistics Manager software uses a similar idea of using your computers but we redirect on port 4999 in that case. We also use a proprietory Manta server which is accessed by desktop computers and Android devices.

Loadmaster / TPN - S L O W
« on: October 31, 2017, 04:33:13 pm »
TPN have moved address of their servers. The new ISP has not registered their site with all the DNS servers. Until they all get updated most requests get routed to the old server, time out then go off on a different search until they locate it.

This is the cause of the considerable time delay to some sites.

The temporary cure is to go into CONTROL PANEL then NETWORK CONNECTIONS then right-click on your current network adapter (adapter properties) and choose PROPERTIES.

Go down to Internet Protocol Version 4. Highlight this then choose PROPERTIES.

Down the bottom if your DNS server is set to Automatic or 192.168.0.1 then choose 'Use the following DNS server'.

Set the Primary to 8.8.8.8
Set the secondary top 8.8.4.4

These are Google DNS servers.

OK and CLOSE.

You need to do this on the individual computers.

I got a 20+ fold speed increase.

Windows / Windows 10 - unresponsive - 25/10/2017
« on: October 26, 2017, 10:00:33 am »
In the last few weeks Windows 10 seems to have developed an annoying feature, probably following the Falls Update.

If you leave the computer for any time then when you come back to it then the computer is unresponsive. You may get a window pop up that tells you that Windows Explorer is unresponsive and you get an OK/Cancel (neither of which work). The mouse pointer moves but if you click on anything then nothing happens. The keyboard is unresponsive.

The only solution is to do a physical reset as CTL-ALT-DEL doesn't work either.

It appears to be caused by the screensaver/sleep function as turning these to a NEVER option stops the effect. This setting is in Settings/Power & Sleep.
